Mahatma Gandhi, at the age 24, moved to South Africa, in 1893, to practice law. He ended up living in South Africa for 21 years. He moved back to India, in 1915, at the age of 45.
Mahatma Gandhi’s father married four times. Both of his first two wives died young and gave birth to one daughter each. His father and his third wife did not have any kids. With fourth wife, his father had four kids. Mahatma Gandhi was the youngest of the four.

B R Ambedkar was the head of the committee which drafted the Constitution of India.
B R Ambedkar was born into Dalit family. Dalits were used to be treated as untouchables and used to face discrimination in different walks of life in different capacity and intensity.
B R Ambedkar used to carry his own burlap sack to school to sit on it outside of the class and he used to rely on peon to pour water for drinking. If for some reason peon is unavailable then he had to survive the day in the school without water. He summed up the situation in the school by saying ‘no peon, no water’.
B R Ambedkar was, posthumously, awarded India’s highest civilian honour ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1990, after 34 years of his death.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel earned the nickname ‘Iron man of India’ for his efforts in integrating around 565 self governed princely states together under one nation India.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was, posthumously, awarded India’s highest civilian honour ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1991, after 41 years of his death.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s wife died due to cancer when his youngest kid was only 4 years old. He read the note of his wife’s death, kept it in the pocket, and continued the cross-examination. He won the case. He informed others once court proceedings were completed.He decided not to marry again.
To become Barrister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel completed a 36 months course in just 30 months, finishing first in the class even without prior college background.

Lal Bahadur Shastri served as (2nd) second Prime Minister of India from 1964 until his death in1966. He died in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 11 Jan 1966, one day after signing a peace treaty to end the Indo-Pak War.
Interestingly, Lal Bahadur Shastri shares the birthday (i.e. 02 Oct) with Mahatma Gandhi. He was born 35 years later.
Lal Bahadur Shastri was, posthumously, awarded India’s highest civilian honour ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1966, in the same year he died.

Subhash Chandra Bose was born into a wealthy family.
He became President of the Congress Party in 1938. However, he had to resign and was later ousted, following the resignation of the majority of members of the working committee in protest over his ways of working and his plans for more power for himself.
Subhash Chandra Bose coined the famous slogan ‘Tum mujhe khoon do, Main Tumhe Azadi Doonga’ (Give me blood and I will give you freedom). Other quotes/slogans by him: ‘Delhi Chalo’ (‘On to Delhi’) and ‘Ittehad, Etemad, Qurbani’ (Unity, Agreement, Sacrifice).
Subhash Chandra Bose’s mother Prabhabati Bose was a social activist and politician. She was elected President of Mahila Rashtriya Sangha in 1928. Subhash Chandra Bose seemed to have got the inclination towards leadership and politics from his mother Prabhabati Bose.
On 29 December 1943, Prabhabati Bose died at the age of 74, around 2 years before the death of his son Subhash Chandra Bose. She gave birth to 14 children: 8 Sons, and 6 Daughters.

Lala Lajpat Rai’s father was a Urdu teacher.
To dedicate himself to the Indian Independence movement, Lala Lajpat Rai quit law practice in 1914.
Even after getting severely hurt in the lathi charge during the non-violent protest against Simon Commission, Lala Lajpat Rai said, while addressing the supporters, that “I declare that the blows struck at me today will be the last nails in the coffin of British rule in India”. The famous slogan “Simon Go Back” was coined during the protest by him.

Ashfaqulla Khan wrote Urdu poetry with the pen name Hasrat.
Ashfaqulla Khan, along with Ram Prasad Bismil, Chandrashekar Azad, and others, robbed a train in Kakori to raise funds for arms and ammunition. Bismil, Khan, Lahiri, and Roshan got death sentences while others involved got life sentences.

Rani Lakshmi Bai’s son named Damodhar Rao died as Infant at the age of only 4 months due to chronic illness. She adopted Anand Rao, son of his husband’s cousin, who was renamed to Damodhar Rao.
When Rani Lakshimi Bai was informed to surrender Jhansi, she cried out ‘Main Apni Jhansi Nahi Doongi’ (I will not give away my Jhansi).
